Discover Golf & Fitness Center was recently expanded to provide more space for golf training and fitness equipment.

“When we first opened (in 2007) we didn’t really know what to expect,” said owner Bob Gosch. However, the business, located at 8500 Roll Road in Clarence Center, attracted 300 members during its first year.

Gosch, who owns the business with his wife, Janet, said people appreciate the three “pillars” of their philosophy: cleanliness, friendliness and service.

Members are men and women of all ages — from 5 to 84. They range in skill level from beginners to professionals, and some are non-golfers focused on fitness training.

The location contains a golf teaching studio. High definition simulators let people practice their shots with accurate visuals. Gosch said a team of photographers took photos every five yards or so on well known courses such as Pebble Beach to give the simulator a highly realistic feel.

Members can practice chipping and putting indoors. Other services include video swing analysis and visual motor rehearsal. The staff also help people with breathing techniques and visualization.

“If we can train you to be a better golfer, we can help you in all aspects of your life,” Gosch said, noting that the benefits of learning to control anxiety or enhance physical fitness are far reaching.

Gosch is a PGA golf professional, as are some of the other employees. The center’s six-week golf schools offers sessions on golf swing motion, golf fitness, equipment, game technique and other topics. Classes have a ratio of one PGA professional per three students.

Fitness equipment provides the opportunity for a well-rounded workout. Gosch said three nationally ranked tennis players, professional and amateur golfers, figure skaters and other athletes are among the members.

“If you think about it, golf is just a sport that involves rotary motion,” he said. The training is transferable to a number of sports, or good for those who just want to stay in shape.

He said Discover Golf’s prices are comparable to the rates of most big box health clubs, if not cheaper.

The Clarence Industrial Development Agency assisted with the expansion in October, said Gosch, adding that his landlord and First Niagara Bank were also helpful throughout the process.

About 1,200 additional square feet house workout equipment and televisions where members can watch training DVDs produced by Discover Golf & Fitness Center. Gosch said the DVDs are an option for those who don’t want to hire a trainer.

The center offers shelter during bad weather at the height of golf season and gives people a place to stay engaged with the sport during the coldest months of the year.

“This helps keep people motivated and helps them hone their skills in the winter,” he said.
