Taking a Swing at Fitness
Business First / April 11, 2008
By DAVID BERTOLA
Bob Gosch leans back in a big soft leather chair and looks up at
the giant flat screen TV.
On it, a golfer drives a tee shot, much to the delight of the gallery.
Gosch, a former bodybuilding champ, notices the golfer’s
physique.
“That guy is the whole reason I’m in business today,” said
Gosch, pointing at the screen. “He’s cemented my career in this
industry. Look at him. He’s built like a wide receiver.”

The golfer is Tiger Woods. The business is Discover Golf Performance
Center, which Gosch opened in December in Clarence
with a goal of helping people improve their physical fitness to
improve their golf games.
“We were going to move down south once he got his PGA card,”
said Janet Gosch, Bob’s wife and general manager of the new
4,000-square foot facility, which has the look of an upscale day
spa.
The TV is mounted on an elegant, rounded stone wall with
a yet-to-be-completed waterfall that will cascade over a lip of
granite.
Along the far wall, Gosch had been working with a woman on
some exercises to help her with her golf game. Tucked behind the
wall is an even bigger screen than the TV.
On it, adjacent to the indoor putting green, is a golf course. Clients
can drive balls into it, gather readings on distance,
and get a sense they’re on par with the likes
of Woods when it comes to experiencing
world-class courses.
Gosch knows a thing or two
about what it takes to be world class.
He’s the winner of several bodybuilding
titles, and earned the Mr. USA
title at the 1989 United States Bodybuilding
Championships. After retiring from
body- building, he took up golf in
1995 and fell in love with
the sport. Today, he
is a Class A member
in the PGA
of America.
“There aren’t
enough golf
instructors
who know
enough
about fitness,”
said Gosch, who combined both his passions.
He set up his new business to be a one-stop shop for anyone
who wants to improve his or her golf game. Gosch said his client
list totals approximately 150, and split evenly between men and
women.
Besides Janet, Gosch employs golf pros, a sports psychologist
and a nutritionist. Clients can be fitted for clubs there, too.
It’s kind of like having a dream team of professionals all under
one roof to help elevate a person’s fitness level or improve his or
her game.
But Gosch is happy to take on personal training clients who
want to increase strength, become the next Mr. USA, or simply
shed a few pounds.
Gosch is the ultimate entrepreneur, and since graduating from
college, has always been a business owner.
He is the previous owner of a gym in Long Island, the Gold’s
Gym in Williamsville, and had a company that provided personal
training at the Buffalo Athletic Club. |
